Just outside of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada - the Goose Capital of Saskatchewan - Doug Griller is doing what has become a perfect fit for him: raising bison. At any given time, there are 2,500 - 3,000 animals roaming 5,000 sprawling acres of land. By his side, and critical to the success of his operation, are his wife Anna, son Blair, and his wife Jodie. When asked why he got in the bison business, Doug will tell you, "I wanted to do something different, something unique - grain and beef was too mainstream for me. I am intrigued by non-traditional agriculture. From a business standpoint, I know that the fewer people involved, the more likely you'll be successful and profitable. After some research, including deer and elk ranching, I realized bison made perfect sense."

And so, since 1993, bison has provided the Grillers with unimaginable opportunity and satisfaction. Doug was quickly captivated by the animal's intelligence and means of self-support. His respect for them escalated. And, early on in his business, so did his love.

His heart was stolen by an orphan calf they appropriately called Buffy. He loves to tell how this bottle-fed bison slept comfortably on their deck for an entire summer. Buffy mothered up to Doug and, every day, would follow him around the yard. When he grew larger, the Grillers sold him. They are fairly certain that, to this day, he is most likely entertaining folks at a petting farm.

"Raising bison," says Doug, "is not just a business. It's a commitment to a lifestyle. It has kept our family both challenged and focused. It is what keeps us motivated - but most importantly, it's what keeps us together."
